8 Perspectives at Minerva, Wellington

'bout says it all really. Our 'Beyond The Door' has made its way to Wellington to reside at Anne Scott's gallery, Minerva till sometime in November. Yoke has already sold one of her pieces which is marvellous.
Dale Rollerson's Textile Tantrums have finished their tour I believe and are now back in Perth ready to come home. I'm not sure what is on the agenda for them as far as Dale is concerned but I would like them back and maybe add some more to them for Affair of the Heart at Northcote College in March next year....and look at framing them, going by the success of Yoke's piece, beautifully framed. The doors will be back by then too.....

'Little Houses'. I have had a rusted and stamped fabric background for awhile rolled up in a drawer. Saw a quilt in Hamilton a few weeks ago that had a street of little houses across it and thought it would be perfect for my languishing pieces. They aren't, so they are going to Barbara Kavermann for a street of little houses she wants to do. However, I'm wondering if little houses done in a neutral colourway may work. They may have to go back in the drawer for another few months.

Louise Gardiner Workshop

Loads of fun working freestyle on 10oz canvas. Louise uses basic creativity tools to get your head around the 'I can't draw' issue. Drawing to music, without looking at the paper and then playing with your sewing machine. She has a nifty reverse applique technique that I love.
This a portrait of Yoke Helwes-Martens without looking at the paper and not lifting the pen. The main stitching is done on the back using the drawing and then the fun starts. She looks very serious and I think she may have an issue with threads coming out of her nose!

'Beyond My Door' ArtsPost Hamilton September 2010.

La Porte Verde (top) and Il Vicolo (bottom) in situ.
Images from a not so recent trip that included 5 days in the Cinque Terre, Italy. Recent photographs are set into heavily manipulated cloth creating layers and evoking a sense of history and of people, past and present, who have passed this way before. The door is symbolic of this past and present.

Textile Tantrums

Dale Rollerson of The Threadstudio called for entries to her travelling exhibition, Textile Tantrums, back in January. They winner was announced in Melbourne, I didn't win but figured I was so transfixed on 'Doors' that the idea of a tantrum escaped me. I think I tried at one point to incorporate a Boston Teaparty type tantrum into my pieces since teabags were also fairly significant in my life at that time, to no avail. Very happy with these pieces though. Used a rubber stamp from my friend Sue Merton who makes exqusite handmade cards and altered clothing so I have no idea whose it is. The sheet came with various images of door furniture so I used the door handle and locks on copper shim, cut out the lock part to reveal the underlayers. The base is my recycled Verona series, Giuliette's Wall, with small squares cut out and stitched on to resemble the heavy wooden doors found in old towns in Italy with great brass or copper nails protruding in regular patterns and lots of Xpandaprint and stitching. The second piece is similar but the swirly motif was taken from the filagree iron work outside the gates of historic buildings.

Tease.

So, what do you think? The WOW judging panel of 2010 felt my garment was more theatrical or fancy dress then innovative wearable art. Hard not to compare with previous entries but will try not to be bitter and twisted. The goal was simply to enter, which I did...anything else was going to be a bonus and I wonder if I had set my goal higher would things have been diferent. We will never know.

Pathetic attempts at reconnection with my Blog after a years absence...sad.
This is the image I used as a gel medium transfer which means that it will be reversed when done. the logical thing now would be to upload the final piece. Who knows...that might take another year.
Would like to upload my Montana World of Wearable Arts garment but can't until the judging is done which is still over 2 weeks away yet. If it's not accepted I shall post it everywhere, if not, it will appear at the show in Wellington from the 23 September to the 3 October. If tyou stumble across my wee blog, please pray to whomever you worship and ask for their spiritual influence...please. If you have nothing that you think is of a higher realm than yourself please the cross whatever parts of your anatomy you find appropriate...thankyou.
